Betting on Chilean Football
The Primera División is at the top of the pyramid in Chilean football, and it is there that the biggest and best Chilean teams can be found, among them Colo-Colo, who are perhaps the best-known team in the country.
Organisation of top flight football in Chile was similar to that of a few others on the continent of South America, namely Bolivia and Colombia, in that for many years the Primera was split into two competitions over the course on one calendar year, and so there were two champions declared in that time. However, as of 2017, the league has reverted back to a single competition format. 16 teams compete in a home and away round-robin system, with the champions declared in October.
Below the Primera is the Primera B, and then the Segunda División, followed by the Tercera A and Tercera B. All of these leagues operate a promotion and relegation system, so it is possible to climb the rungs of the ladder in Chilean football and arrive right at the top.
Teams at the top of the Primera División qualify for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, while there are also domestic cup and super cup competitions. Added to the men's and women's national team, that's a lot of games to be weighed up on our Chilean football odds comparison tool.
Chile Football Odds
Betting on the Chilean national team is a popular activity, mostly because the team has been a major contender in recent years, overturning the dominance of Brazil and Argentina in South American football. However, in the continental club competition, Chilean teams have never pulled up many trees: Colo-Colo remain to date the only Chilean winners of the Copa Libertadores, for example.
Domestically, despite the overall historical dominance of Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile, the title has been shared around more recently. Home form is slightly stronger in the last two completed seasons than the global average, but the average number of goals per game is around 2.5, which is nailed on average in a global context, and going over or under 2.5 goals is therefore not a popular pick on betting coupons.
Chilean Football History
Another of the CONMEBOL nations, Chile have been a major contender in South American football in recent times, although do not possess a history as illustrious as some of their neighbours. Certainly in the World Cup, La Roja, as the red-shirted team are known, have been somewhat of a disappointment, having never progressed beyond the Round of 16 thus far.
In the Copa América, for so long things were the same, until recent times when a golden generation of Chilean players including Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal led the team to glory in both the 2015 and 2016 editions of the competition. The national team are considered one of the best currently in South America, as of 2019, and therefore expect to find them on many betting coupons.
Chile has had a professional league since 1933, and in that time, Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile, both teams from the capital, Santiago, have been the most successful, sharing almost half of all titles to date.
