Betting on Finnish Football
The Veikkausliiga is the premier league of Finnish football. It is a 12-team division, and as is common with leagues in Northern Europe, due to the climate, the league is played between April and October in order to avoid the harsh winters.
The team which finishes bottom of the Veikkausliiga is relegated to the Ykkönen, or First League, with another team coming in the opposite direction. Similarly, teams can then go down to the Kakkonen, or Finnish Division 2, which is then split into three divisions.
In addition to the league format there are two cup competitions in Finland, and teams who excel in the Veikkausliiga and Finnish cup competitions gain entry to the qualifying phase of UEFA competitions.
Domestically, HJK Helsinki have dominated, claiming 29 championships, and are therefore a staple of football betting accumulators.
Finland Football Odds
The Veikkausliiga is the elite club competition in Finland and is a 12-team league that is played within the calendar year. The 2019 season only recently begun but the completed 2016-18 seasons can give us useful information with regards to how to filter out your bets on Finnish football.
HJK Helsinki are the big boys of Finnish football, and claimed their 29th title in 2018, retaining the trophy from 2017. However, in 2016 there was a huge underdog story, akin to Leicester City winning the Premier League in 2016, when IFK Mariehamn claimed their first ever title. The year before, in 2015, SJK claimed their maiden triumph too, meaning that outsiders have had a lot of recent success in Finnish football.
Unsurprisingly then, home advantage doesn't seem to play such a vital role in claiming points, if the least three-completed seasons are anything to go by. Similarly, goals were slightly down on the global average, as were the number of draws. All of this points to the fact that, recently at least, and away from the performance of HJK Helsinki, Finnish domestic football has been a bit of a minefield for betting. Using our Finnish football odds comparison tool to inform your bets is a good approach for picking winners from this small, but competitive, European league.
Finnish Football History
The greatest player in Finnish football history is arguably Jari Litmanen, who won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and later went on to play for Barcelona and Liverpool. Former Reds skipper Sami Hyypiä is another legend of Finnish football, and a number of Finns have impressed in the bigger European leagues, particularly the English Premier League.
Internationally, the Finnish men's team has always played second fiddle to the successful men's ice hockey team. The men's national team certainly don't feature heavily on betting coupons, unless they are being backed against, therefore.
As yet, the Finnish national team have yet to qualify for a major tournament. The women's team is rather more successful, having qualified for three successive UEFA European Championships between 2005 and 2013. In the first of those appearances, the team reached the semi-final stage.
